Parents, Guardians and Students, As a teacher, time is precious. We need to manage our time to grade papers/projects, put lessons together, talk/email to students/parents/guardians who need questions answered, manage our life outside of school, etc. What I'm trying to say is that I'm not managing this blog properly. I don't feel like I'm communicating properly with parents/guardians. This blog is not beneficial enough for you, me and the students. What I've decided to do instead is start a Classroom OneNote and use OneNote instead of the Mme Kuehnhold website/Blog. On OneNote it's easier for me to add projects, work, instructions for the students and keep the parents/guardians up to date. So far, I have included all my dayplans since September, as well as the schedule for the day. I've also included recent lessons in French which they will need for next weeks (Monday, November 12) mini quiz on les determinants. Every week or so, the students will get a mini quiz on the different category of words found in the French language. For example, what is an article, verb, adjective, noun, preposition, adverb.... What is the use of this word, how to find it in a sentence, the different types of, .... In French it's important to know these things to be able to write properly. It strengthens your language skills and helps you understand things better in French. I'll include all the big projects that the students are working on and maybe some activity sheets depending on what they'll be doing with them in the future. Next week, on November 15th, Tania Mason will coming to teach up how to use Teams and OneNote effectively. I've heard great things about the app Teams. The students have three projects on the go right now. An art project for Remembrance Day Ceremony which will be displayed in the cafetorium. The students are put in groups of 2 to 4 and they have to paint/draw one quarter of a flower on a large sheet of bristol board. That project is due beginning of November.
The next project is a drama/french (written and spoken). The students have to put themselves in the "shoes" of an inanimate object and act like that object. They have to present this drama piece in front of the class for one minute. They are more than welcome to use props. The drama piece monologue should be typed, double spaced and handed to me (or emailed) on October 29th. The third project is a geography project due November 12 (this may potentially change). They are going to be urban planners and create an imaginary town of 10 000 people. They are to work individually (their choice) or in groups of two. They need to include 5 different zones (residential, commercial, industrial, recreational and institutional). They need to present it in front of the class once finished. Handouts with rubrics have been distributed regarding these projects (except for the Remembrance Day one). Progress reports are coming up. They will be sent home November 7th. Bonne action de grâce! Wishing you all a happy thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends! It's amazing what a day with family can do for your soul. We've just had a new addition to our family. My brother and his wife welcomed Allegra. The most beautiful baby girl. I may be a little biased. She's our first extension to the family. One little 4kg person has changed my family's focus in the wink of an eye. So thankful.
This week is turning out to be quite busy again. On Tuesday, we have 14 students away (between the morning and afternoon class) helping with the soccer tournament at Beckwith Park. Tuesday, is supposed to be a hot day (25 degrees but it's going to feel like 33), please make sure they have a hat, sunscreen and water. On Wednesday, they have their first geography test. It's a variety of short answers, true or false and multiple choice. On Friday, they have their first spelling test. It's only four sentences long. Here are the sentences they need to study for: 1. Les feuilles multicolores tombent plus vite quand il pleut. 2. J'adore boire mon chocolat chaud sous une couverture regardant la nature danser avec le vent. 3. L'automne est un deuxième printemps où chaque feuille est comme une fleur. 4. Faites comme l'arbre, changez vos feuilles et gardez vos racines. Changez vos idées et gardez vos principes. Can you believe September is almost over!? The grade 8's are moving along splendidly! They can be a talkative group but when the work comes out they are busy completing their assignments. Since my last post, we've had two pop quizzes on the verbs avoir and être in their present form. A lot of the students did poorly (there wasn't much emphasize in learning verbs in the younger grades). Since the students need to learn the present of these two irregular verbs to learn the passé composé, it's essential that they know it. Sometime this week they will have another pop quiz on the same two verbs. I have been doing different types of exercises with them for them to remember.
We have also been working on sentence structure, increasing their vocabulary, text comprehension, and how nouns, adjectives and articles agree with one another (I think that's how you say it in English). In the next few weeks, I would like the students to do a small presentation in front of the class about themselves. It doesn't have to be long. Three to five minutes long. I'm looking for quality over quantity. The presentation can be pre-recorded and watched in class or it can be done "live". As long as I hear them speak for that amount of time, I'm easy. I understand that some students have anxiety with public speaking. They should come to me and let me know so that we can come up with a solution. The students and I have discussed about their future geography tests and we have agreed to have small but numerous tests instead of large and less tests. On that note, the first geography test will be after Thanksgiving. It will cover: what is geography, the article we read about Ebola (I may omit this depending on length of test), basic questions about Canada which we covered in class, what is human geography, what is physical geography, urbanization and the future of cities, definitions of certain words (urbain, rural, banlieue, un établissement, démographiques, migration), three different types of population organisation and density (linéaire, dispersé, groupé, faible, modérée and forte). Picture day and Meet the teacher!! What a great first week of school! Everything ran smoothly! Both French Immersion classes have surpassed my first week expectations... but there are a few students who speak too much English in class... Please remind your children to make an effort in speaking French in class. It's very important for them to immerse themselves in the language in class since the classroom setting may be their only chance for such an opportunity.
On another note, picture day and Meet the Teacher are this Wednesday, September 12th. In regards to picture day, students are advised NOT to wear green (they will blend into the background if they wear green). Meet the Teacher is from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. I'm looking forward to meeting each and every one of you. If you can't make it but wish to speak or meet with me for various reasons, please send me an email or call the office and I will get back to you as soon as possible so we can set something up. This week is also a four day week. Friday, September 14th is a P.A. day. Bienvenue! Welcome to our class site!
Hope you all had a good and restful Summer break. Please use this site to help you with assignments, homework or if you have a comment or question that you need answered regarding a lesson. I will do my best to keep the blog updated but I sometimes forget. I'll upload PDFs of documents, forms, assignments, and whatever else I deem important so you (student and parent/guardian) can have access to them at the tip of your fingertips. The best way to get in contact with me would be through my school email address. Bring on 2018-19!! Going to be a fantastic year! |
